“Gian Lorenzo Bernini is one of my top favorite artist, definitely my favorite sculptor. I created this painting as my tribute to him and it was part of my 2004 One Man Show which it was all inspired by classical Italian Art.
My favorite Bernini sculpture is “The Rape of Persephone”, the one that inspired me to create “Martirio”. The painting is a detail of the sculpture concentrating only on her from an specific angle while I was studying the sculpture at Rome’s Galleria Borghese, where Bernini’s most important pieces reside in its permanent collection. After many visits to Galleria Borghese and several in details studies of this amazing Bernini’s Masterpiece, this one angle and perspective was the one that made me create my “Martirio”. The name came as a result of her face and body expression that although it is clear that Persephone is trying to get away from her predator, there is a small contradiction between her face expression and the actual engagement of their bodies."
